Nissan Offers Leaf in More U.S. Markets.
The introduction of electric cars like the Nissan Leaf has certainly created a buzz in the marketplace. Edmunds reports that Nissan has delivered more than 8,700 Leafs in the U.S. since it introduced the car nearly one year ago.
Now, Nissan plans to expand the Leaf’s availability. Nissan says in a press release that it has “re-opened reservations and has begun taking orders from the general public for the 2012 Nissan LEAF in Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.”
The expansion makes the Leaf available for sale in a total of 30 states, including Washington, D.C., and Nissan says that nationwide, 50-state ordering will be available by March 2012. Electric car shoppers who order the Leaf in its current markets can expect delivery starting in spring 2012. The base 2012 Leaf SV starts at $35,200 and the SL trim starts at $37,250, both before a federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

Now that the Buick Regal is being manufactured in North America, it is time for General Motors to release a couple of new examples of its latest luxury sedan. Pricing for both new models have been confirmed by Buick. Starting at $29,530, the Regal eAssist features an advanced six speed transmission, lithium-ion battery system and electric motor/generator that allows regenerative braking. When paired with the 2.4 liter, Ecotec four cylinder, the eAssist will achieve up to 36 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city.
On the other end of the spectrum is the Regal GS performance sedan. Rated at a SAE-Certified 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the GS uses a direct-injected 2.0 liter turbocharged Ecotec four. First transmission choices will be limited to the six speed manual that will still net quality fuel economy of 27 mpg on the highway. Power will go to the front wheels for now and the GS makes for power than its competitors such as the Acura TSX V-6, Audi A4 Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo S60 T5. Base MSRP will be $35,310.

As this is being read, the 2012 Nissan Altima Sedan and Coupe are making their way onto Nissan dealerships nationwide. Available in three model levels: the 2.5, 2.5 S and 3.5 SR, there is also a new option package for the 2012 model year. For $490, a Altima buyer can add on the Value Package that includes Bluetooth and leather wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls. The Special Edition Package is a continuation from last year.
Starting MSRP for the Altima Sedan 2.5 CVT is $20,410. That gets buyers a 175 horsepower 2.5 liter inline four cylinder and CVT transmission. The 2.5 S CVT starts at $22, 570 and the 270 horsepower 3.5 SR CVT starts at $25,430.
If an 2012 Altima buyer wants a manual transmission, they’ll have to go with the Coupe. A six speed manual can be matched to either the 2.5 liter four or the 3.5 liter V6. A 2.5 S 6MT Coupe will begin at $23,600 and a 2.5 S CVT will start at $24,100. Starting MSRP for the 270 horsepower 3.5 SR 6MT Coupe is $30,760 but oddly, the 3.5 SR CVT is cheaper at $28,430.

Hyundai has put the Genesis Coupe on an extreme weight-lifting regime. The result? A new look and more power. The current 3.8-liter V6 Genesis Coupe produces 306-horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Expect the next-generation car to carry the same 333-horsepower, 291 pound-feet of torque-producing mill as found in the 2012 Genesis Sedan. 2011 Buick Enclave Features Rollover Prediction Technology. Despite the attention they garner, rollovers are among the rarest of vehicle crashes though they can be the most dangerous. According to the NHTSA, rollovers accounted for 2.2 percent of all vehicle crashes, though fatalities from these crashes amounted to 35.4 percent of all traffic deaths.
Not surprisingly, automakers have spent a lot of time and money on developing technology to help mitigate their occurrence. Take GM, for example. On its latest 2011 Buick Enclave crossover, engineers have installed advanced sensors designed to predict rollovers and help protect vehicle occupants before a crash occurs.
With such technology on board, the Enclave has garnered the NHTSA’s highest five-star overall vehicle safety score and was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The new sensors work in conjunction with the Enclave’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control, Panic Brake Assist and anti-lock brakes. The sensors also ensure timely deployment of occupant crash protection systems such as airbags.

They can predict in a fraction of a second whether a rollover is likely to occur. As the U.S. preps for the 2011 New York Auto Show, the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show is already getting underway. One of the first concepts revealed at the show: the Buick Envision plug-in hybrid crossover concept.
Though the press-release doesn't explicitly say the Envision is running on Volt technology, it does say it "incorporates GM's world-leading PHEV plug-in hybrid system," possibly an oblique reference to the system and possibly a cue as to what to expect from the recent Crossvolt trademark registration. Curiously, however, the Envision is also all-wheel drive, with a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine of undisclosed output. A pair of electric motors drive the other two wheels, drawing electrons from a lithium battery.
Billed as a concept, the crossover's shape is definitely a bit more flowing and faceted than a production vehicle--but the glimmer of something nearly road-worthy isn't far beneath the surface. The scissor doors, of course, will have to go should GM decide to built the vehicle, as will the micro-cameras used to replace the rear-view mirrors.
Key tech features in the Envision concept include a "next-generation" intelligent Bluetooth system that links mobile phones to the Web, an OLED touch-screen interface, a heads-up information display on the windshield, a solar panel roof to augment electrical loads, and a carbon fiber/magnesium/aluminum chassis. Electromagnetic suspension elements handle ride control, with adjustments done on the fly

Hyundai in Korean means "modernity" and the designer quality of their affordable vehicles lives up to the name. Founded in 1947 by Chung Ju Yung as an engineering company, Hyundai wouldn't begin manufacturing automobiles for almost two decades due to the Korean government's stance that it would only import cars, not assemble them. But eventually, Yung moved onto the automotive industry and Hyundai began development on a line of cars. After signing a two-year contract with Ford in the late ‘60s, Hyundai put out its first sedan, the Cortina, followed by the Japanese-inspired Pony in 1974. It was now only a matter of time before Hyundai models would find their way onto American shores and by 1986, that's exactly what started to happen.

The subcompact Excel was the first car to hit the United States under the Hyundai banner in 1986. The car was an enormous success right from the start due to its efficient drivability and low price tag. Over 100,000 Hyundai Excels were sold in little more than half a year with the final first-year tally finishing in at almost 170,000 units. The Excel was also given the tenth spot on Fortune magazine's Best Product list. The latter part of the decade saw the arrival of the Sonata, a midsize sedan that was Hyundai's first foray into producing its own line of vehicles using in-house technology. However, once the 1990s arrived, car buyers weren't as kind to the brand as they were the previous decade. Sales began to dip despite the company opening up an additional plant in Chennai, India. In 1998, Cung Ju Yung transferred ownership of the brand to his son, Chung Mong Koo. A new emphasis was put on the design and quality of Hyundai vehicles, including an industry-leading 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty for cars sold in the US. NEW YORK–Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is testing U.S. reaction to an all-electric car at this week's New York International Auto Show.

The four-door iMiEV can run for 80 miles on a full charge. Mitsubishi plans to begin selling the car in Japan to fleet customers in mid-2009 and to the general public in 2010, the company's managing director for product development, Tetsuro Aikawa, said Tuesday. The car will cost between $25,000 and $30,000 in Japan, or up to $7,000 more than its high-mileage, gas-powered counterpart, the i minicar.

Aikawa said Mitsubishi will consider bringing the car to the U.S. or Europe after 2010 if there is enough demand for a small electric car. The iMiEV is smaller than a subcompact, about the size of a four-door Smart car.

"I hope such a market will exist," Aikawa said.

The iMiEV takes 14 hours to charge completely on a 110-volt home outlet, or seven hours to charge on a 220-volt outlet. Japan is developing quick-charge stations that will allow the car to be charged in 30 minutes, Aikawa said.

Mitsubishi has been developing the iMiEV since 2005. To build it, the company put a five-by-three-foot lithium-ion battery under the front and rear seats of the gas-powered i minicar, which is already on sale in Japan. The car makes no sound, even when it starts, but otherwise drives normally. It has no tailpipe emissions.

Some automakers have expressed concern about the safety of lithium-ion batteries, which have overheated in cell phones and laptops. But Aikawa said Mitsubishi is confident in its battery, which is made by GS Yuasa Corp., the biggest battery maker in Japan. He said GS Yuasa is already providing lithium-ion batteries for Boeing 787 jets, among other customers.

The number of iMiEVs produced in Japan will be limited at first to the number of batteries the company can produce. Aikawa said Mitsubishi plans to build 2,000 iMiEVs in 2009 and 5,000 the next year.

The iMiEV puts Mitsubishi squarely in the race to develop a mass-market electric car. General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. are among the other companies developing cars powered by lithium-ion batteries. DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) - The US Senate Saturday approved 25 billion dollars in loan guarantees for the financially strapped US auto industry, intended to spark a wave of automotive innovation. ADVERTISEMENT

The bill, which was approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, are the first loan guarantees for US carmakers since Congress approved a similar 675 million dollar measure for Chrysler Corp. in 1980.

Chrysler Chairman Robert Nardelli, however, said this week the loan guarantees should not be considered a rescue package for struggling carmakers. "This is not a bailout," he said.

Under provisions of the new legislation, not only US carmakers are eligible for the guarantees but also suppliers and foreign automakers with plants in the United States that are more than 20 years old -- Nissan and Honda's US operations qualify.

Martin said automakers could use the money for projects such as a new engine plant GM has announced it intends to build in Flint, Michigan.

GM Chairman Rick Wagoner spoke of plans to invest 370 million dollars in a new plant, which will be the exclusive site for production of the gasoline engine or "range extender" for the electric Chevrolet Volt, due out in November 2010.

He saved the money by buying a roll of coins each month, Jones unsure of how long it's taken him to save up the $8,000 stash he used to part-purchase his new Chevy.
